Crashes while overtaking long vehicles

The Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia, New South Wales Division, Roads and Transport Directorate (IPWEA NSW R&TD) commissioned the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB) to conduct a literature review and to perform an analysis of the crash data relevant to overtaking a long heavy vehicle. The study also investigated the possibility that grey nomads (drivers aged 55 or more driving a mobile home or towing a caravan or camper trailer) may have difficulty judging whether the road ahead is clear for a sufficient distance to safely overtake a long heavy vehicle.

The study is available to all members of the Roads & Transport Directorate for download.
