Local Government Functional Road Classification

The State Government uses the process of classifying roads as a mechanism to assist in the allocation of State Government funding as well as to distinguish the management responsibility between State and Local government authorities.

Most councils in NSW have a full range of road types from arterial roads to local access roads, but their physical characteristics vary substantially. To better understand these different characteristics of Local Government roads, the Roads & Transport Directorate has produced the Local Government  Functional Road Classification Poster.

There is also a discussion paper that outlines the logic behind the development of the hierarchy.

Both the poster and discussion paper are available for download with member council access or registering for free.
